Miss Frances R. Brown is Radcliffe's new Dean of Residence and of Student Affairs for the College. She succeeds Miss Emily B. Lacey, who resigned June 30 after four years as Dean of Residence.
Miss Brown, whose appointment became effective August 1, has a varied background in teaching and educational administration. She is an honors graduate of Wells College, Aurora, N. Y., and received her M.A. degree in English literature from the University of Chicago.
After teaching in Baltimore and Restertown, Md., Miss Brown became head of the English department of Arlington Hall Junior College, Washington, D.C. She has been Dean of the Mary Lyon Junior College, Swarthmore, Pa.; Dean and President of the Chevy Chase Junior College, Washington, D. C., and Academic Dean of Pine Manor Junior College in Wellesley.
When Miss Brown assumed office at the Annex, the words "and of Student Affairs for the College" were added to her title to emphasize that her duties include the supervision of undergraduate extracurricular activities.
The new dean reports that the housing situation will be her first concern this fall, and when the annual residence problems are resolved she will have more time for dealing with student activities.
When asked to comment on the controversy about Radcliffe membership in Harvard undergraduate organizations, Miss Brown said she would like more time to analyze the existing system before taking a stand. "I want to see the way it operates," she said, "and not make any comment until I have more facts."
