The Crimson baseball team returns to the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League in New York this afternoon when Columbia is likely to become the varsity's third straight League victim. The Crimson is undefeated in EIBL competition.
On Saturday, however, the varsity will face Princeton. And although the Tigers will be in the midst of their annual House parties, it is unlikely that the game will bear much resemblance to Wednesday's 27 to 8 triumph over Brandeis.
Dave Brigham will probably start against the Lions today, with Bob McGinnis most likely to be on the mound at Princeton. McGinnis pitched exceptionally well against Holy Cross last Wednesday, allowing only four hits and no earned runs over ten innings. He struck out four and walked only two. Assuming that the varsity's fielding edge has not been blunted by the Brandeis workout, McGinnis could be decisive against Princeton.
Phil Haughey will catch for both Brigham and McGinnis. In Waltham on Wednesday Haughey went three for five, scoring twice, smacking one of the varsity's four home runs, and sacrificing Walt Stahura into scoring position in the third inning.
Stahura in Center Field
Stahura, who had one hit and tallied twice, will be in center field. Against Brandeis, Stahura smacked a triple in the fifth, and reached base in both the third and fourth innings, first on a walk and then when dusted lightly by a pitched ball. He came home each time.
First baseman John Simourian, right fielder Matt Botsford, and third baseman Tom Bergantino also homered for the varsity on Wednesday. Bergantino, along with shortstop Bob Hastings and left fielder John Getch, also rapped out doubles. Simourian led the Crimson's fancy base running by following up a walk in the ninth by coming home in one play on a confusion of stolen bases and Brandeis errors. In all, the varsity stole more than half a dozen bases.
JV to Meet Brandeis
Byron Johnson will pitch for the junior varsity nine this afternoon when they face an untried Brandeis squad. The Crimson should have a good chance of defeating the Judges, as Ken Hathaway and Jim Shue, jayvee standouts, will return after an absence of three games.
Tomorrow's game will be the fourth in four days for the JV squad, which has boosted its record to 8-1 for the season. The Brandeis nine is just beginning a three-game schedule. Earl Dennis will pitch for Brandeis.
Kenary to Pitch
Left-hander Joseph Kenary will take the mound for the Yardlings for the first time today when the freshman nine faces Belmont Hill School. Coach Adolph Samborkski's squad will be hoping to better its 3-5 season record.
Stan Golblatt will catch for the freshmen, with Chuck Leamy at first base, Hale Sturges at second, Jim Crampton at shortstop, and Dave Kipp at third. Harvey Mazer, Bruce Gilley, and Dave Hurwitt will be in the outfield.
