Hathaway Hits Two Home Runs As Varsity Nine Beats Penn 6-5

PHILADELPHIA, May 15--Utility outfielder Kent Hathaway bashed out two home runs, the second coming in the tenth inning, to lead the Harvard varsity nine to a 6 to 5 come-from-behind victory over the University of Pennsylvania here today.

Behind 4-2 going into the ninth, the Crimson tallied for three runs to take the lead, only to give the Quakers an unearned run in their half of the ninth and send the game into extra innings.

With two away in the tenth, Hathaway, the junior varsity captain who started only because Walt Stahura and Dick Fisher could not make the trip, slammed his second solo round-tripper of the contest for the winning run.

Penn threatened in the last half of the tenth, filling the bases on three Crimson errors, but were checked by Joel Bernstein, the winning pitcher. Sloppy fielding hampered the varsity today, as it committed six errors in all, five in the last two innings.

The game began as a pitching duel, between the Crimson's Bob McGinnis and the Quakers' Gordon Brietman. After three scoreless innings, Hathaway blasted his first home-run, into dead center. Penn took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two singles and a triple by Ed Rohrbacher, good for two runs.

Botsford scored for the Crimson in the fifth on a walk, a sacrifice, a long fly ball, and a wild pitch to tie the game. Harvard returned the free run in the bottom of the fifth as Gordon Achilles singled, reached third on another base hit, and tallied on a passed ball.

Haughey Hits 3 Run Homer

Penn moved ahead in the seventh on two singles and a fielder's choice, good for two runs as Dave Brigham replaced McGinnis on the mound for the Crimson.

Bob Hastings opened the ninth-inning rally with a single. Dave McGarrity, pinch-hitting for Brigham, batted out another single, and then catcher Phil Haughey slammed a three-run homer to give the varsity a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, with Bernstein pitching for the Crimson, Penn loaded the bases on two errors and a base-hit. Bernstein walked in one run, but struck out Achilles to retire the side.

The tenth inning victory gave the varsity nine a 5-3 league record. Today Yale clinched another title, by beating Dartmouth.
