Crimson Nine Will Oppose Huskies at 3

By Richard T. Cooper

The Crimson baseball team should have relatively little trouble taking its fourth straight Greater Boston League game, this one at 3 p.m. today, on Northeastern's diamond.

Northeastern lost 16 to 5 to Tufts yesterday afternoon, and since the Jumbos fell into the victim sack for the varsity, 9 to 3, today's meeting should be little more than an opportunity for the Crimson to tighten up for the Army game on Saturday.

Bob McGinnis will start on the mound for the varsity, probably facing Husky captain Dodd, who is reportedly the best of Northeastern's pitchers. And it is on the mound that the Huskies are strongest.

Offensively, however, Northeastern has been sporadic, with even its best efforts falling below what has, been necessary to outscore the varsity. After taking a merciless beating from Boston University, the Huskies bounced back to show reasonable strength in their next encounters.

In contrast has been the consistent scoring ability of the Crimson, led by captain John Simourian, John Getch, Bob Cleary, and Bob Hastings. The varsity has taken four straight since it returned from the South, by scores of 15-5 (Cornell), 9-3 (Tufts), 7-1 (Boston University), and 13-7 (M.I.T.).

Yesterday the varsity worked late into the dusk sharpening the infield. Despite a chill wind the Crimson showed traces of speed and hustle which might well serve to win the support which the squad has felt in need of.

The freshman baseball team, with a record of one victory and two defeats, will meet Northeastern today at 3 p.m. on Soldiers Field. The probable starters are Dave Barkenhagen, catcher; Renner Johnston, 1b; Tom Bagnoli, captain, 2b; Bruce Rosenberg, ss; Bob Farina, 3b; Dick Green, If; Charley Leamy, center field; Joe Pellegrino, rf; and David Kipp, pitcher.

The JV, undefeated in four starts, plays American International College at 3 p.m. Coach John Caulfield will start Dave Masch as catcher; Frank Saia, 1b; George Harrington, 2b; Levin Kasarjian, ss; Jim Shue, 3b; Kent Hathaway, lf; Keith Coster, cf; Tony Markella, rf; and Steve Rhoades, pitcher.
