Tennis Squad Defeats B.U. By 9-0 Score

With a minimum of effort, the varsity tennis team defeated a vastly inferior Boston University squad 9 to 0, yesterday, on the Soldiers Field Courts. The only interesting match of the day was one between the varsity's number one singles team, Larry Sears and Dale Junta and the second doubles combine of Ian Gianetti and Steve Gottlieb.

Junta and Sears won this contest, two sets to one, to remain top team on coach Jack Barnaby's ladder. The rest of the afternoon's action merely served as exercise for the top six singles players and as practice for fourth, fifth and sixth doubles teams.

At first singles, Junta blasted B.U.'s Bill Kerr, 6-0, 6-1, and in the second spot, Gottlieb, working towards developing his net game, took a 6-3, 7-5 contest from Ray Kenney. Third singles man Sears won a 6-4, 6-2 match from Al Weber.

Easy Wins

Cal Place, Gianetti and Phil Mills at the bottom three singles positions, won very handily, with no man dropping more than two games in the course of his match.

In the doubles, Barnaby teamed Mills with Ned Weld, Laurie Pratt with Bill Wood, and Al Goldman with Pete Krogh. Only the Pratt-Wood team ran into any difficulty, as they were extended before winning 6-4, 7-5.

Today, the varsity will be confronted with a somewhat different situation when it faces Army on the Soldiers Field Courts. This will be the Crimson's first Eastern Intercollegiate match since it defeated Navy during the spring vacation at Annapolis.

Crimson Favored

Although Army will be the strongest team the Crimson has faced at home this season, the varsity should take the match without too much difficulty.

Barnaby expects that the Cadets will be "beatable but tough, as always."

The varsity lineup will be the same at the top six singles positions, except, possibly, at fourth singles if Ben Heckscher is able to play. Rounding out the top ten will be Jim Cameron, Ned Weld, Pete Krogh and Laurie Pratt. The top two doubles combinations will be Junta-Sears and Gianetti-Gottlieb, but the bottom three team will not be decided definitely until this afternoon.
