Nine Defeats Jumbos, 9-3, Behind Repetto's Pitching

A four-base, four-run, tie-breaking error in the seventh inning gave the Crimson baseball squad a somewhat tainted 9-3 win over Tufts yesterday at Soldiers Field. The home team added two more runs in the eighth to round out the scoring.

Although Crimson pitcher Dom Repetto was consistent throughout, allowing five walks while striking out two, the game was poorly played. The Jumbos committed three errors, while Harvard registered four.

Right fielder Matt Botsford was the big hitter for the Crimson, with a solo home run in the second. The ball was well hit to left field carrying just beyond the glove of Jumbo Sal DeAngelo.

Botsford's round-tripper opened the scoring, and the Crimson made it 2 to 0 in the fourth when Babe Simourian drew a walk, stole second, and scored on John Getch's single to left center.

Tufts scored first in the sixth when Dick Fortin reached second on a two-base error by Bob Hastings and scored on Pete Whalton's single to right.

The Crimson regained a run in the bottom of the sixth when Bobby Cleary opened with a single, went to third on Simourian's double to center, and scored on John Getch's sacrifice fly to left.

Tufts came up with two more in the seventh to tie the score at 3 to 3. With one out, Bert Muench singled to center and took second on a fielders choice. Then Ed McMellen hit a high fly which center fielder Mickey Costa (substituting for Walt Stahura) misjudged and lost for a Jumbo home run and two scores.

The big break for the Crimson came in the bottom of the seventh on McMellen's four-run error. With one out, Repetto singled to left, taking second when Tom Bergantino was hit by a pitched ball. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Cleary fouled out. Simourian was purposely passed to load the bases, and McMellen lost Hasting's drive for an error and four runs, making the score 7 to 3.

The Crimson closed the scoring with two more in the eighth. Costa reached first on a fielder's choice with one out, and took second on a ground out by Phil Haughey. Repetto drew a walk and Bergantino singled, scoring Costa and sending Repetto to third. Bergantino took second on the the throw, and the relay was low for an error, allowing Repetto to score and sending the hitter to third.
