The recommendation of the Undergraduate Athletic Council to raise wrestling from a minor sport to major status, has met with the approval of the Faculty Committee on Athletic Sports, Donald M. Felt '49, assistant director of athletics, announced yesterday.
The change, which was recommended two years ago, was made retroactive to the beginning of the current season. Therefore, each letter winner will receive a major letter in the new major wrestling colors, which have not been announced to date.
During the two years that the UAC has considered the proposal, its members observed wrestling to determine whether or not it fulfilled the necessary requirements for major status. These included amount of practice needed, number of spectators, and caliber of competition.
The undergraduate committee is now considering the request of the squash team that it also be made a major sport.
