Dunster House Committee Rejects Council Membership Proposition

Reasons 'Unsatisfactory'

The Dunster House Committee has refused to grant a Student Council request that it give the Dunster Council Representative voting membership, Committee Chairman Eugene Lew '58 reported last night.

The Council, Lew reported, recently sent the House Committee a proposal which maintained that all House Committees should make House Council representatives full members "as soon as possible," in order to "further cooperation" and to "effect more complete understanding of issues, wishes, and actions."

Lew said that the Dunster House Council Representative, Carl S. Sloane '58, talked to the Committee about the proposal. Sloane asserted that in terms of "human nature," the Council felt its members would do a better job if they were members of the House Committees, since they would feel "responsible" to both organizations.

Committee members replied that they thought the Council's intentions were "good, worthwhile, and should be supported," but, they added, full membership is unnecessary for closer cooperation. A Council member should feel enough responsibility to his organization to attend House Committee meetings diligently if he is instructed to do so.

Lew stated that he disagreed personally with another part of the Council proposal which maintained that the House Committee Chairman should report any "delinquencies" to the Council's Executive Committee. The Chairman said that all House Committee members should be directly responsible to the Committee and not to an outside organization.

The Council proposal, along with a copy of the November 4 agenda, was sent to the presidents of all the House Committees.
