The varsity swimming team opened its season with a 58-28 win over West Point Saturday, setting a new Harvard and pool record in the 400-yard relay during the course of the meet.
Bill Murray, Jim Stanley, John Hammond, and Ron Mischner combined to produce the record time, cutting a full second off the old record of 3:57.9 set last year when the event was instituted.
Hammond and Stanley also contributed outstanding individual performances to the Crimson victory. Hammond took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.7, and Stanley won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.9.
Pete Zemo, who competed only on the interhouse level last year, made an impressive showing in his first varsity performance, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 23.7.
Sophomores such as Konrad Ulbrich, Jim Perilman, and Gary Pildner also turned in encouraging performances and are expected to take up much of the slack of last year's graduation losses.
The Yardlings, meanwhile, won their annual opener against the Waltham Boy's Club, 57 to 29. Bruce Hunter led off with a new freshman record in the 50-yard freestyle of 23.2 second.
