Three University professors, among 48 signers of a full page advertisement in Friday's New York Times, have called for immediate cessation of atomic explosions and for United Nations control over outer space.
Kirtley F. Mather, professor of Geology, emeritus, Pitirim A. Sorokin, professor of Sociology, emeritus, and Paul J. Tillich, University Professor, signed a statement saying "we are facing a danger unlike any danger that has ever existed."
In the advertisement, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy" outlined the "deep uneasiness" existing inside Americans. Blaming this uneasiness on "living half a life," the 48 signers called for Americans to "rediscover our moral strength."
Included among the signers of the statement were authors Cleveland Amory '39, John Hersey, James Jones, and Lewis Mumford. Robert B. Nathan, national ADA chairman, and Norman Thomas, former Socialist nominee for President, were also on the list.
