Northeastern Ends Hockey Team's NCAA Tourney Hopes

Lawn Makes 44 Saves to Lead Huskies to 4-2 Upset of Varsity

By Charles Steedman

Northeastern goalie Bill Lawn had time to smile only occasionally during last night's varsity hockey game at Watson; after it was over he couldn't do anything else. Single-handedly he had upset the Colorado-minded Crimson, 4 to 2.

The defeat definitely marked an end to any varsity hopes for a return trip to the NCAA championships in Colorado. These hopes had been based on a post-Christmas spurt which had given the Crimson ten victories in eleven games and on Saturday's 5-3 defeat of Boston College.

The loss last night was fatal because it came at the hands of a team that the Crimson had beaten in the opining game of the season, 8 to 3.

Lawn made 44 saves in all, 23 of them in the final period, and shut out the varsity completely over the last 48 minutes of the game. By contrast, Captain Charlie Flynn made only 15 saves. He made three in the last period and allowed two goals, but the varsity was pressing so hard that every Northeastern shot came on a breakaway.

In that final stanza, the Husky defensemen packed the ice in front of the cage. preventing the Crimson forwards from getting chances at rebounds. The puck was in the Northeastern zone most of the time, and the Huskies were shorthanded for almost a third of the period, yet Lawn saved again and again.

Defenseman Dick Andrews came in alone on Flynn to score his first goal of the season at 14:20. It proved to be the winning tally. Then, three minutes later, center Richie Cavanaugh back-handed an insurance goal while the Huskies were a man short.

First period Crimson tallies by Dan Ullyot and Bob Owen were matched by two Northeastern goals in the second period.
