Bate Receives Gauss Award

Walter J. Bate '39, professor of English, received the Christian Gauss Prize of $1000 late last week for his book, The Achievement of Samuel Johnson. The award was given by Phi Beta Kappa.

The annual prize was presented by award chairman George Sherburn, professor of English, emeritus, for the best book of literary scholarship or criticism published during the preceding college year by a university press.
