Dr. Augustus Thorndike '17, Chief Surgeon to the University Health Service, has been made chairman of a committee to investigate methods of reducing the mounting incidence of college football injuries.
The committee, which was formed at the request of the American Medical Association, also includes Dr. T. Bartlett Quigley '29, surgeon to the Health Service, and five other University doctors.
Dr. Thorndike recommends that football practices and games be given closer medical supervision. He also believes that sports organizations should set up programs for prevention of injuries.
"I've always felt," added Dr. Thorndike, "that conditioning of the college players would be enhanced by some out-of-season practice. I agree with Lloyd Jordan that 20 sessions in the spring would be desirable to protect the athletes from serious injury."
