Princeton Police Deplore Absence Of Harvard Cops

Michael Kapoliner, head Princeton proctor, said yesterday that Captain Matthew J. Toohey, of the University police would not travel to the small New Jersey community to help maintain order.

Kapoliner quoted a letter from Toohey which said there had been too much vandalism and painting of fences and of statues around Harvard recently and that he could not come because he had "too much work."

Commenting on this letter, Kapoliner said, "It's a pretty fishy story." He went on to say that "with his squad of 60 men he certainly could come down."

The Ivy League college police forces have usually sent a few of their own men to cover "away" games in recent years. Kapoliner pointed out that he had been in Cambridge for last year's Princeton game.

In a comment late yesterday afternoon Toohey said, "I've got two or three men who are sick. If they come to work on Saturday, we might go down to Princeton."

Kapoliner, discussing the coming weekend, said that "We've never had too much trouble with Harvard students," but that the "Yale students were uncontrollable."
