Varsity, Yardling Harriers Face Providence on Franklin Course

Fresh from their decisive victories over Boston University and M.I.T. last Friday the varsity and freshman cross country teams will tackle Providence teams of unknown quality this afternoon on the Franklin Park course. The Yardling meet will start at 3:30, followed by the varsity at 4 p.m.

The Friars, who defeated Holy Cross but lost to Army, boast two outstanding runners, but little depth. Number one man, junior Bill Hanlon, defeated the varsity's ace, Pete Reider, as a freshman, while number two man, senior Rod Boucher, defeated Captain Dave McLean when the two teams last met.

After Hanlon and Boucher, however, comes a squad of untried sophomores. Army placed its whole team between the two Providence aces and the third Friar to finish.

The meet should resolve itself into a race between Reider, McLean, Dave Norris, Hanlon, and Boucher for the top finishing positions.

The rest of the Crimson squad will consist of Ralph Perry, Bill Thompson, Jim Schlaeppi, Bob Holmes, Mac Brown, Morris, John Read, Dick Wharton, and either Dyke Benjamin or Larry Lavers.

Yardling Lineup

The Providence freshmen are also an unknown quantity. The fact that the West Point Plebes beat them badly proves nothing.

In their opener last Friday, the Yardlings crushed the B.U. and M.I.T. freshmen, but on the whole, the times were unimpressive. In Ed Martin, Wes Hildreth, Dave Call, and Dane Oliver, the Yardlings have a strong punch, but from their showing last week appear to lack depth behind this quartet. Finding this depth will be the big Yardling problem.

Rounding out the freshman lineup will be Gary Brooten, Henry Marcy, Dave Donaldson, Bob Cabot, Jim Lorenz, Dick Millett, and Dave Fillman.
