Winthrop Student Reported Missing Since October 6th

Edward Gates Disappears; Had Returned From Marines

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Edward L. Gates, Jr. '57 has been missing from his Winthrop House room since Oct. 6, according to a report issued yesterday to the Cambridge police by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward L. Gates of Manchester, Mass.

John F. Bitzer, Jr. '58, Gates' roommate, said that he disappeared on the evening of Saturday, Oct. 6, taking with him only a small suitcase of personal effects and an undetermined amount of money.

After three years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Gates had returned to college this fall. According to his brother, Henry T. Gates '60 of Matthews Hall, he had failed to inform his parents before joining the Marines at the end of his freshman year. The younger Gates added that he had no fear for his brother's safety.

Gates is a member of the sophomore class and is concentrating in Mathematics. His parents were notified of his absence by Bitzer last week and came to Cambridge on Monday to confer with University officials.
