Revamped Crimson Six Defeats Dartmouth, 6-2

By Charles Steedman

Varsity hockey coach Cooney Welland is never convinced that a particular Crimson player belongs in a particular position.

He did some typical shuffling Saturday: defensemen Pete Summers and Dan Ullyot became forwards, the latter as second line counter. The move paid off, for Ullyot scored twice and Summers tallied once in the varsity's 6-2 victory over Dartmouth at the Watson Rink.

By winning its Ivy League opener, the Crimson has now gone through its last 20 League games with only one defeat and has beaten the Big Green five consecutive times.

Inability to finish scoring plays, particularly in the second period, was the only thing that prevented the contest from becoming a rout. Dartmouth goalie Ted, Bagnall went down far too often, leaving an open cage, but the varsity was seldom in position to take advantage of it.

The Crimson jumped to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period and seemed headed for an easy win. Ullyot scored at 2:27 on Joe Crehore's rebound and added another goal three minutes later after taking defenseman Art Noyes' pass out from behind the cage. Noyes got his second assist of the night when Lyle Guttu tallied the rebound from his blue line shot at 19:15.

But Dartmouth dominated a sloppy second period, holding the varsity scoreless and cutting its lead to 3-1. Dave Chapin scored the goal at 1:54.

Dartmouth's Resurge

The Green suddenly threatened early in the final period when penalties to Derick Nicholas and Ullyot came within a minute of each other. Dartmouth's Ron MacKenzie scored at 5:24 while Nicholas was off, making the score 3 to 2, but then Bob Owen, Mario Celi, and Denny Little kept the visitors from capitalizing on its two-man advantage.

Owen tallied on a 12 foot shot from directly in front of the cage at 10:32, and less than two minutes later Summers tapped in the puck as goalie Bagnall tried to freeze it.
