Cleary Scores Nine Points As Six Wallops B.U., 13-2

By Jack Rosenthal

Bill Cleary scored nine points last night.

As a result, the first-ranked varsity hockey team whipped Boston University, 13 to 2, at the Arena, and Cleary himself moved into serious contention for the NCAA season scoring record.

His goal and eight assists bring his total to 59 points in 14 games, and give him a percentage edge of 5.6 points on the national mark, 84 in 22 games, set in 1949-50 by Jack Garrity of B.U. Cleary has six games to go, not including any possible NCAA play-off contests.

As for last night's game, it was simply never a contest. Both Captain Scott Cooledge and Terry O'Malley slammed in three goals, and Tom Worthen, Doug Manchester, and Ned Bliss each added two.

Flynn Drops Puck

The Crimson boosted its 4 to 0 first period lead to 7 to 0 before the Terriers stopped goalie Charlie Flynn's shut-out bid. Joe Quinn scored the first B.U. goal at 10:02 of the second period on a long shot which squirted between Flynn's legs. Five minutes later Flynn tried to scoop up the puck, but accidentally dropped it in front of the nets and B.U. center Jack Murphy drove it home for the second goal.

Sophomore Tom Worthen scored first for the Crimson, at 6:26 of the first period. Two more goals, by Cooledge and Manchester, followed in the next three minutes, and O'Malley scored number 4 at 7:18.

Alken Leaves Game

Three goals in the first four minutes of the second period took care of B.U. goalie John Aiken. Cooledge scored twice-at 1:58 with Cleary and Mario Celi assisting, and again at 2:42 with another assist from Cleary. When O'Malley scored on still another Cleary pass at 3:55, B.U. coach Harry Cleverly sent in substitute net-tender Bill McDonnell, who finished the game.

Both B.U. goals followed, but Flynn and substitute goalie Jim Bailey stopped the Terriers otherwise, while the Crimson added two more tallies in the second period and four more, including two by Ned Bliss, in the last period.
