The freshman football team will travel to Hanover this morning for a second try at opening its season. The first scheduled game, with Tufts last Saturday, was flooded out, but the Yardlings are considerably stronger for the delay.
Particularly on defense should the freshmen be solid. They scrimmaged Dartmouth plays against the varsity all week, which should take some of the surprise out of the Indians' unique V-formation offense.
Coach Bob Margarita noted, however, that his defense has a tendency to consider the V-formation in terms of the T which most of them learned in high school. He feels the second line has adjusted to the new formation more quickly than the first.
The starting Yardling wall, which averages an estimated 196 pounds, will include Larry McCully over the ball, a pair of 200 pound tackles, Pete Briggs and Bob Shaunessy, and guards Jim Keating and Glen Nelson. The pair of tall ends will be Warren Huff and John Soucek.
In the backfield Margarita plans to start Stan Morkel at fullback, John Allen at wingback, and Frank Newell at quarterback. Gordon Marlowe will run as taiblack, replacing Roland Welchel, who was injured on Wednesday.
Although Margarita found his offense wanting in polish before the canceled Tufts game, with an extra week's drilling it has improved considerably.
