Scrimmages Start For Soccer Team

With only a week and a half left before its opening game, Oct. 9 a short-handed varsity soccer team ran through its first scrimmage of the year yesterday afternoon at the Business School.

Although practice sessions began three days ago, Coach Bruce Munro said all the returning lettermen from last year's squad have not reported as yet. Munro had to give the day off to several players who complained of stiff muscles. Munro plans to spend three hours a day on practices from now until the season opener against Wesleyan here.

Munro was pessimistic about the Crimson chances with Wesleyan. The Cardinals defeated the varsity handily last year and have already blanked Brown, 2 to 0. "They will have played two games when we meet, and with our late start they ought to be far ahead of us in condition and play-making," Munro said.

The team will be hurt by the loss of Alex Haegler, last year's regular center half. Haegler, a Brazilian, is taking flying lessons to fulfill his country draft deferment requirements. Munro felt he would not get much strength from the mediocre '57 team to make up graduation losses.

One bright spot, however, was the return of Maurice Toro, a Columbian who played regularly two years ago, but was out last season. Munro expects to play Toro at center forward.

Munro has scheduled a full-dress practice game with Boston University Monday afternoon on the Business School field. Another game, with a pick-up squad from the Business School, has tentatively been set for tomorrow afternoon here.
