The varsity golf team should run into stiffer competition than it has met in the past week when the golfers play Amherst at Dedham Country Club this afternoon. In yesterday's contest, the golfers dumped another opponent--this time Babson Institute, 6 to 1.
In the Babson match, three of the varsity golfers, Ted Cooney, Bruce Thurmond, and Kent Brown, won their matches, 4 and 3.
Number two man Bill McAllister posted a 5 and 4 victory, while Jim Jones won 2 and 1 and Pote Malkin won 3 and 2. The only loser yesterday was Captain Jack Brophy.
Although the varsity links men beat Amherst, 5 to 2, last year, all seven of the matches were close. Amherst, which has its own golf course, usually produces a strong team, and should provide tough competition for the varsity. Doug Boyd will return to the lineup again today after missing the Babson match.
Although the freshmen don't play their first match until Saturday, the Yardling team is now set after holding qualifying rounds.
John Bailey and Bob Ornsteen tied for first among the freshmen in last Friday's trials, both carding 82's. Other qualifiers were Jon Lind, Louis Klein, Jack Jaspers, Craig Swoboda, Fred Vogel, Bill Parley, Jay Hollander, and Tom Ellington.
