Neither rain nor Army could stop the varsity tennis team Saturday when it took to the indoor courts in the West Point hockey rink and trounced the Cadets, 7 to 2. Originally scheduled to play a 15-point outdoor match, the Crimson settled for the regulation six singles and three doubles inside after the monsoon.
Coach Jack Barnaby's team won all of the singles matches to clinch its first Eastern Intercollegiate League victory of the season. All of the wins were in straight sets except for the fourth and fifth, where Harris Brooks edged Bill Frier, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, and Gene Mann nipped George Olmstead, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Ham Graven, beat Roland Nordlie in the first singles, 6-2, 7-5; in the second singles Captain John Rauh gave up four games in each set to Dan Hutcheson, while Alex Haegler dropped three in each set against Joe Grubbs Army's number three man. At six, Donn Spencer downed Jim Higgs, 6-3, 6-0.
With the match already clinched, Barnaby was able to use the remainder of his traveling squad in the doubles. Herb Stone and Terry King, normally third or fourth, beat Nordlie and Chuck Reades in the first doubles, 6-1, 6-1.
