150 lb. Crew Honors Haines, Gets New Shell

Coach Lee Rouner's varsity 150-pound crew, preparing for its season-opener against M.I.T. April 24, christened a new shell yesterday afternoon in honor of retired crew coach H. Herbert "Bert" Haines.

Haines, who retired after the 1952 season, coached Crimson crews for 32 years. At times, since 1920, he has coached the varsity heavies and the varsity and freshman 150-pounders.

"The Friends of Harvard Rowing" raised the $2300 for the shell, built by Polcock of Washington, which features weight-saving cast aluminum riggers. Francis Lee Higginson '29, chairman of the committee, presented the shell in yesterday's ceremonies.

Evenly balanced with four seniors, two juniors, and three sophomores, the Crimson 150-pound crew faces a tough schedule: after weak Tech, they face Dartmouth May 1, then Princeton and Yale for the Goldthwait Cup the next week. The 150-pound season closes at Princeton May 15 with the Eastern Association Rowing Championship.
