The Student Council last night postponed decision on its approval of the "Taffrail Club," a proposed compulsory organization of NROTC students. After conferring with the deans this week, the Council will make a final decision Monday.
The Council took its stand after a suggestion by Clifford L. Alexander '55, president, and muttering of "coercion in a democratic university community" from several of the members.
Both the Council and the dean's office approved a similar organization last year in the army ROTC, the Caisson Club. No complaint was made at that time, according to Alexander, because the Council and the dean's office "did not notice" the compulsory dues-paying requirements of the organization.
University approval of the club does not ultimately lie in the approval of the Council, but with Dean Watson's office. In practice, however, the dean's office. In practice, however, the dean's office does not often charter a club which is not also approved by the Council.
Arnold Schuchter '55, chairman of the Council Committee on International Activities, reported that no further progress has been made on procuring financial backing for transportation and other costs of foreign study.
Alexander and Paul D. Sheats '54, past president, will review the Council's past year and discuss the coming term Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. over WHRB.
