Crimson Defeats Brown's Runners

The varsity track team gained its first victory of the season Saturday at Briggs Cage, defeating Brown, 92 to 16, and sweeping every event except the 600 and the two-mile relay.

Brown's anticipated strength in the field events did not materialize. Carl Goldman led the way for the Crimson, capturing the 35-pound weight with a heave just short of 51 ft. Art Siler won the shot put event with a 49 ft. 2 in effort. The broad jump and high jump went to Terry Cheek and Brian Reynolds respectively, and Don Richards came through in the pole vault, clearing 12 ft.

Brown captain Gene Whitlock provided the Bruins with the day's only individual success, a 1:17.3 victory in the 600. But Whitlock's satisfaction was soon dampened a bit as Yardling captain Dick Wharton ran the same distance in 1:16 flat.

Brown Wins Two-Mile

Crimson performers then proceeded to capture the hurdles, dash, 1000, mile, and two-mile distances, and the mile relay team was not pushed as it romped home an easy winner in 3:35.4.

The Yardlings, concurrently meeting the Bruin cubs, mauled their rivals, 72 to 36, winning nine out of 13 events.

High scorer for the freshmen was Joel Cohen, who captured the hurdles in 5.7, the dash in 4.9, the broad jump with a 21 ft. 6 5-8 in, leap, and tied for first in the high jump at 5 ft. 8 in. Dick Wharton had the day's best time in the 600 yard distance and Dick Norris arrived first in the 1000.
