Crew Captain William W. Geertsema '54, of Groningen, Netherlands, and Winthrop House, has been awarded the Francis Hardon Burr Scholarship as the outstanding scholar athlete in the Class of 1954, it was announced yesterday.

Last year Charles W. Ufford '53, All American soccer player and intercollegiate squash champion, won the scholarship given to the member of the graduating class "who best combines the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and athletic ability."

Geertsema, an Economics honors candidate, has rowed in the first boat for the past three years. Previously, he rowed in the Yarding first boat and on the first crew at Phillips Exeter Academy.

The scholarship was established in memory of Francis H. Burr '09, first marshal of his class, and captain of the football team, who died a year after his graduation.
