McGann Attacks U.S. Support of Dictators Of American Nations

Assistant Professor Thomas F. McGann '41 yesterday attacked United States policy toward Latin America as unprincipled support of dictatorial governments. McGann was elaborating on a letter he wrote to the New York Times in which he criticized several Latin American governments.

McGann asserted that the United States should not sacrifice its democratic ideals to satisfy the present demands of subduing communism and preserving trade.

The United States has already subverted its democratic principles, according to McGann, by supporting Peron in Argentina with a 125 million dollar loan, in order to secure better trade relations. "Peron's philosophy is essentially fascist and it is questionable whether the interests of democracy are best served by supporting him and other dictators who are imitating his methods even if they are as anti-communist as we are."
