The varsity soccer team will be seeking its fifth win of the season when it opposes perennially strong Trinity team at 3 p.m. today on the Business School field. Last year, Trinity, whose record was six won, one tied, and one last, defeated the Crimson, 3 to 1.
With 11 returning letterman, including the entire 1953 starting backfield, the Hilltoppers have was four and lost one this year, the loss being to Yale, 2-1. They have beaten Clark, Tufts, the University of Massachusetts, and Worcester Tech.
The team is led by Captain Wade Close, center half, of whom Coach Roy Dath said "he could play any position and play it well." With Close in the backfield is Art O'Council, a right half who was first team. All-New England and honorable mention All-American last year.
Center forward Ken Swanson has already scored seven goals this year, placing him second in scoring in the New England Intercollegiate League, behind Dartmouth's Egil Stigum. Sophomore Doug Raynard, who is considered as good as last year's captain and All-American Neil Mutschler, will be at inside left.
The probable starting lineup for the Crimson will be: Hank Holmes, Mauricio Toro, Grey Hodnett, Marv Weise, and Bill Linglebach in the forward line; Captain Carey McIntosh, Stacey Holmes, and Denny Little as the halfbacks; Hugh Sargent and John Hadik at the fulls; and Lindsay Fischer in the goal. Bill Cowperthwaite, Chuck MacVeagh, and Godfrey Truslow are also expected to play.
Weiss' two goals against Amherst put him in a tie with Hodnett for team scoring hours, both having tallied five. Toro is in second place with three goals.
If the varsity defeats Trinity, it will have won more games than it did all last year.
