Economics 1 is the University's most popular course, according to preliminary figures released yesterday by Sargent Kennedy, Registrar of Harvard College.
Professor of Economics Arthur Smithies course in the principles of Economics beasts a total enrollment of 592 students, as increase of 40 from last year, when it ranked third in popularity.
Ec I has only a small lead however over Math 1A, which has an enrollment of 588. This puts it in second place for the third consecutive year.
In tenth place last year, Humanities 4 now ranks third, somewhat replacing the popularity of Humanities 2, which dropped from first place last year to twelfth this fall. Government 1B remains in fourth place with an enrollment of 467.
Cliffe Boosts Comp Lit
A large increase in female enrollment enabled Comparative Literature 164 to finish in fifth place--a surprising addition to the top ten. Fine Arts 13, which boasts a substantial Radcliffe enrollment, climbed from eighth to sixth place. Music 1 still ranks seventh in popularity, with a total enrollment of 379.
Elementary Social Sciences courses are in eight and ninth positions, with 378 enrollees in Social Sciences 6, and 375 in Social Sciences 1. Chemistry 1 with 365 students, dropped from ninth to tenth place, continuing its decline from two years ago when it ranked fifth.
Gen Ed Ahf Largest
Actually, General Education Ahf had the largest enrollment of all courses, with 1460 students, but this course is required of all freshmen and its membership is not based on popularity.
Comparative Literature 166 with its 142 'Cliffedwellers, has the highest Annex enrollment. Humanities 4 ranked second in female popularity, while Fine Arts 13 dropped from second to third place. The most surprising decline is in Music 1, which was first last year is now in fourth place. Social Sciences 111 ranks fifth in feminine students.
Aside from the general education courses the fields of Government, English and History remain the most popular areas, of study, with total enrollments of 1963, 1741, and 15558 respectively. In the Gen. Ed. fields, the Social Sciences Department was the most popular, with a total enrollment of 2027 students in elementary and middle courses.
