Five Harvard professors were awarded honorary degrees yesterday by Columbia University President Grayson Kirk.
Paul B. Freund, Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law and Henry M. Hart, Jr. '26, professor of Law, were made Doctors of Law; Carl J. Friedrich, John M. Gaus, professors of Government, and Arthur Holcombe '06, Eaton Professor of Government received Doctors of Humane Letters degrees.
Kirk, when conferring these and 40 other degrees said, "College leaders must stand against legislators and small interest groups. Men are needed who will tell professors they are neglecting the educational needs of students by offering "too many courses which correspond more to the specialized professional interests of the individual professors."
A fostering of understanding of "the ethical principles which ought to regulate human begins" is necessary if we are to avoid destruction by men "who are essentially barbarian, despite impressive technical proficiency," Kirk continues.
