HANOVER, N.H., May 12 Only a determined last-half Dartmouth drive could overcome a fighting Harvard lacrosse team here today as the heavily-favored Indians were forced to come from behind to win, 10 to 7. The varsity plays at Tufts tomorrow.
The Crimson played one of its best games of the year against an opponent generally rated far superior. Coach Bruce Munre's men showed continual hustle and alertness despite the high temperature. Only an inability to utilize manpower advantages deprived the Crimson of a brilliant upset.
Conversly, it was Dartmouth's proficiency on extra-man plays which finally decided the game.
Crimson goalie Steve Den Hartog played an outstanding, aggressive game, foiling repeated Dartmouth scoring plays.
The Crimson built up an early lead on a goal by Phil Waring and two by Monk Aiello, and led at the end of one period, 3 to 2. Despite another score by Waring, the Indians managed to tie the count, 4 to 4, at the half.
Eli Curtis counted three times for the visitors in the last half, but Dartmouth was too powerful.
Star Dartmouth attackman Dick Gates scored twice, as did Lon Lenhard; former football end Dave Thielsher tallied three times. The best Dartmouth goal, however, resulted from a field-length dash by Captain Dick Bloomer, a defenseman.
This point, at 5:05 of the third period, gave the Indians the lead for the first time, 5 to 4. They were never headed thereafter.
Coach Bob Pickett's freshmen travel to South Byfied this afternoon to play a rugged Governor Dummer squad. The games today are in the nature of tune-ups for the varsity and Yardlings, both of which meet Yale in Cambridge at 3 p.m. Friday.
