Claverly Men Must Remain Year at Hall

Announcing a major policy shift, Associate Dean Watson '37 said yesterday that the 1953-54 Claverly assignments will be permanent for one year. Freshmen placed there will not be allowed to move into any House vacancies that may occur.

Wednesday, the Faculty Committee on Houses will discuss assigning tutors, rather than proctors, to the Claverly "entries." Indications are that the Committee will favor tutors.

There are about 70 men for whom no space is immediately available, although the Houses have made room for 50 extra students (total 2,650), and Claverly may receive 132 men instead of the 126 there last fall. Watson said that the usual enrollment decrease over the summer will create sufficient vacancies for the extra students. Therefore, some Houses plan not to assign all their Claverly rooms until September.

Last week, the Committee completed assigning 1,052 freshmen and 61 upperclassmen to Houses, and notices were distributed Saturday. As previously announced, all applicants were accepted as "official" House members, with some living in Claverly "entries."

The plan has aroused much resentment, because freshmen claim the caliber of men assigned to Claverly is unusually high. Watson said the Committee has reviewed the assignments and the decisions are final; no petitions will be considered. Under the old system, men who were not satisfied with their House assignment could go to Claverly instead.

Watson claimed yesterday that the Committee made "fewer arbitrary assignments" than at any time during his seven and a half years as Associate Dean.

Seven new "Houses entries" in Claverly are: Dunster: first floor and a suite on the second. Leverett: back of the second floor and Senior House. Adams: rest of the second floor. Eliot: third floor. Winthrop: two suited on the third floor and part of the fourth floor. Kirkland: rest of the fourth floor and three suites on the fifth. Lowell: rest of the fifth floor.
