Huskies, Maroons Defeat Nine Over Weekend, 2-1, 1-0

Crimson pitchers gave up only three runs over the long weekend, yet lost two ball games.

Sophomore righthander Andy Ward threw a three-hitter at Springfield last Saturday, but the Gymnasts bunched two of their safeties in the second inning to win 1 to 0 at Soldiers Field.

Yesterday, John Arnold yielded four hits, but Northeastern adged the varsity, 2 to 1, in Brookline. The Crimson collected six hits and left 11 runners stranded.

On the freshman diamond, Adolph Samborski's '56 nine scored seven times in the seventh against Northeastern for its second win in three days. The final count was 16 to 6. The Yardlings topped M.I.T. on Saturday, 7 to 1.

Ward also had a perfect day at the plate for the varsity, knocking out two of the three Crimson hits off Gymnast hurler Jack Sanford. He went one better than Sanford in the strike-out department, setting down nine to Sanford's eight.

Springfield first baseman Al Griggs opened the second inning with a double to right field, then ambled home with the game's only run on George Flood's long triple to center, one out later.

In the Northeastern game yesterday, Arnold pitched a one-hitter after the first inning, but that hit helped bring in the winning run in the last of the third. The Crimson had previously tied the score in the top of the third after Northeastern combined three hits in the first for its initial run.

Yardling Ed Rossano went the first six innings of the M.I.T. game to receive credit for the win. Yesterday, Art Kessler went the last seven to take the win over Northeastern. Bill Cleary cracked a home run against M.I.T. and a double yesterday.

Today, the J.V. nine faces State Teacher's College at 3:45 p.m. on Soldiers Field.
