German High Commissioner James B. Conant '14 escorted Konrad Adenauer in the West German Chancellor's four-hour visit to the University yesterday. Adenauer was ending his ten-day tour of the United States.
At a luncheon given for him by the Corporation in the Fogg Museum, Adenauer referred to the University as "the Oxford of America" and said, "American universities have played a leading part in putting Europe back on its feet after the terrible ordeal of the second World War. The helping hand you have lent us has been, and still is, of utmost value."
Commenting on the political situation in Europe, the German Chancellor remarked, "There is no political group of political leader in the continent of Europe today who does not consider European unification one of his highest goals.'
Adenauer arrived at Logan airport at 10 a.m. yesterday with his daughter Lotte Adenauer and six high-ranking German officials. The group was met by former President Conant, David M. Little '18, Secretary to the University, and Provost Buck.
Conant arrived in Cambridge Thursday and has been staying at the Dana Palmer House.
Greeting him at his first stop--Dunster House--were Master Gordon M. Fair and a group of German exchange students. Adenauer attended a reception for all Geman students studying at Harvard in the House library, visited the Dunster dining hall, and a student's room.
The party then moved to the Yard where it attended a meting of the faculty at University Hall.
Adenauer left Boston yesterday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. for a one-day visit to Ottawa. He will leave the Canadian city today to return to Hamburg.
