Hannah Will Investigate Deferments of Wealthy

Dr. John A. Hannah, Undersecretary of defense designate, announced yesterday that the defense Department will investigate complaints of favoritism to young men in the higher income brackets.

The former Michigan state college president said it "worried" him that wealthy young men can afford to go to college and claim deferment while the sons of the less wealthy are forced to enter the armed services.

Hannah was confirmed for the post of Undersecretary of Defense in charge of manpower and personnel yesterday by the Senate armed services committee.

Kennedy reminds

Meanwhile Registrar Sargent Kennedy '23 reminded students that course failures may now lead to immediate revocation of 2AS draft classification.

Under current interpretation of selective service law, the University can nor state on the Selective Service College Student certificate, field in June, that men who fail to advance with their class have "successfully completed" the year.

"As of today," Kennedy said, "even if by some quirk of the grading system the student stands in the upper half of his class and had a high score on the deferment test, Selective Service has suggested to boards in this area that they give him a 1-A classification." It is still up to the local board, however, to make the final decision.

He pointed out that if a man fails a course, but has a backing of extra credits from taking five courses, then the requirement is fulfilled.
