Jenner Committee Will Probe Area Subversives

Senator William E. Jenner's (R.-Ind.) Internal Security Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee will be coming to Boston within a month to begin hearings on subversives in New England colleges and universities, but according to committee sources, no Harvard faculty members will be questioned.

These sources last night said that "six or seven" will be called before the committee in Boston and will be asked directly whether they are or have ever been communists.

Jenner said he wasn't singling out suspects "by colleges" with regard to any specific institutions in the Boston area. He explained the committee has been conducting hearings in areas in which there are enough "cases" to justify investigation.

Patterned on New York

The hearings in Boston will be patterned after the subcommittee's recent inquiry into subversives in New York colleges. Four teachers have been dismissed by New York institutions for refusing to testify.

Jenner last night said he has been trying to avoid duplication of the work done by Representative Harold Velde's (R.-Ill.) House Un-American Activities Committee. Velde's committee has also been investigating selected ex-communists on college faculties, but has not yet announced plans to go on the road.

Avoid Duplication

Jenner said he told Velde "We were interested only in one phase of subversive activities in American education--the infiltration of high-level education by Communists, apparently in accordance with elaborate plans."

The Senator also said last night he hopes to wind up this phase of his investigation fairly soon.

He explained that persons named by the committee informants will first testify in executive session. If they refuse to answer questions about past or present Communist affiliations, they will be asked to do so in open session.
