Crimson hockey followers have one of their last chances to see Cooney Weiland's 1953-54 sextet in action tonight before it heads west over Christmas. The twice-beaten varsity meets one of the weakest Boston University teams in several years at 9 p.m. in the Garden.
M.I.T. and Northeastern tangle in the first game of the double bill at 7 p.m.
Weiland will leave with his squad to meet the best in the West following the varsity's final warm-up contest Friday against Northeastern. The Crimson's showing against Minnesota, Denver, and Colorado College should indicate whether there is any chance of Harvard's being ranked among the national hockey powers this year.
The Crimson's showing tonight should indicate whether there is any chance of a good showing out west.
Students may obtain two dollar reserved seats at half price for all Harvard hockey games played in the Boston Garden, including tonight's game against Boston University, upon presentation of their bursar's cards at the HAA office in the basement of the Union, Unreserved balcony seats will be sold for ninety cents. B.U.'s Harry Cleverly sadly shakes his head and swears he had lost 20 potential hockey players through scholastic failings since last year, including possibly the best single player in the East. Dick Rodenheiser. With Rodenheiser in the army, the varsity will undoubtedly have an easier time tonight.
The Terriers have so far been unable to win a game against top competition. They dropped their initial contest to Brown, 4 to 3, and followed with losses to Yale (7 to 0) and R.P.I. (5 to 2).
Weiland was annoyed himself yesterday. The warm rains spoiled the scheduled practice on the Soldiers Field rink, and he was unable to rent any ice at the Garden. The team will face B.U. without any skating since Friday's 5 to 3 loss to Boston College.
Weiland will have to go with the same lineup that played top-ranked B.C. on even terms for two periods before collapsing miserably in the third. Captain Norm Wood, who had two goals Friday, will be at first line center with Jeb Bray and Dick Clasby on the wings. Fast developing Pete Summers and Ed Mrkonich will start at defense ahead of Charlie Flynn in the goal.
Three Period Hockey Needed
If the Crimson can play three period hockey and can show more definite signs of developing a consistent scoring punch tonight, there may be hope for it in the West.
Starting on the second line will be veterans Doug Manchester at center, with Scott Cooledge and Ned Bliss as his wings
