Sparkling performances by four members of the Boston University track team led the most spirited Torrier squad in recent years to a 60 to 49 victory over the Crimson Saturday afternoon at Briggs Cage.
Bob Rittenburg and Alan Howe were high-scorers for the varsity, capturing first places in the 40-yard hurdles and 600-yard dash, respectively. Rittenburg and Howe also ran in the mile relay, with Howe gaining over 15 yards in one of the finest anchor, legs seen recently.
Although the Crimson won both the mile and two-mile relays, B.U. strength in the other field events enabled them to pull away. Bruce Hoscock scored 13 points for the Terriers in the day's most outstanding performance, placing first in the high jump and pole vault and second to B.U.'s Nat Baker in the 35-pound weight. Baker also won the shot put.
The 1000, mile, and two-mile events were runaways for the Terriers' Bill "Wee Willie" Smith and John Kelly, who romped away in the final laps. Dave Alpers and Renny Little did manage to pace Smith stride for stride in the 1000 until Smith's stamina prevailed.
B.U.'s Tom Covington also contributed to the onslaught with victories in the broad jump and dash.
Meanwhile, the freshman team was busy overwhelming the Terrier fledglings, 88 to 13--a performance which prompted varsity coach Bill McCurdy to remark, "If we had our choice of any three freshmen, we'd have won the meet easily."
Joel Cohen equalled the varsity time in the hurdles, besides winning the broad jump and placing second in the dash. Phil Williams won the mile and Dave McLean the two-mile with no difficulty, and Dick Wharton surpassed the varsity time with a 1:17.8 clocking in the 600. Dick Norris was all by himself in capturing the 1000.
The next official track meet is against Brown after the Christmas vacation.
