President Pusey indirectly replied to Senator McCarthy in a short speech yesterday, marking the expansion of the School of Dental Medicine.
"After reading in yesterday's headlines that Harvard is a mess, occasions and achievements like this give the lie to that kind of remark," he said.
He did not mention McCarthy by name. He then told the group:
"One of the ideas in recent years that lies at the root of the difficulties we have with education is that education has not done its work as successfully as it might have, the idea that people have come to think of education as something you do at a certain stage of your life and then spend the rest of your life practicing what you learn."
