Branford, Other Yale Teams Victorious in Inter-College Contests

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Nov. 20--Branford College staved off an eleventh-hour Leverett House attack, to defeat the Bunnies, 6 to 0, and win the House-College championship here today.

In other intra-mural competition, Yale took the edge. Silliman, Pierson, and Calhoun also won, while Dunster and Winthrop scored the only victories for the Harvard Houses. Eliot tied Jonathan Edwards, while Adams and Saybrook fought to a deadlock. Branford defeated Lowell in House soccer, while the Harvard freshman touch football team won.

Leverett, sparked by the passing of sophomore quarterback Dave Segal, moved 83 yards on nine plays late in the last quarter, but the drive stalled on the Branford five. The Yale eleven took over and eased through two plays as the clock ran out.

Branford scored its touchdown with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Quarterback Ralph Tucker heaved a 30-yard pass to end Joe Pasquette to set up the score on the Bunny 12. Two consecu- tive passes to John Halch moved the ball across, but a subsequent pass attempt for the point failed.

Leverett, handicapped by the loss of star fullback John Bagdasarian, could muster no sustained drive until the final period surge. Guard Pete Pratt intercepted a Yale pass on the Bunny 13, and ran back to the 20 to open the threat.

Smith Injured

Two complete Segal passes followed, to Ed Lerner and Ed Hurley, moving the ball to midfield. A line play was stopped, but Segal then hit Hurley and Day Tyler with two more passes to move the ball to the 30. Stu Dunsker carried through the line on successive plays to the 14. Segal speaked through to the 12, but three passes failed.

Segal then tossed to Al Glazerman on the five, but the gain was not sufficient for a first down, and Branford took over and triumphed.

End Buzz Smith of Leverett suffered the only serious injury of the game; he hurt a shoulder bone in the third period and had to be helped off the field.

Dunster defeated Berkeley 7 to 0, scoring in the first period, and then relied on its defense to hold off the late Yale threats.

In the opening period, after the ball changed hands twice, a Berkeley pass from center went awry, and the Funsters recovered on the home team 15. Larry Boies scored on a run off his own right end, and a pass from Jack Brophy to Ron Peyton was good for the extra point.

Winthrop topped Davenport College on the second of two long passes in the second quarter. Steve Endlar tossed a 20 yard pass to Ray Daley for the score. Davenport outgained the Puritans, but its last minute desperation passes failed.

Eliot Plays Tie

Eliot House, which was undefeated, untied and unscored upon last year, but which ended lower in House standings this season, fought a scoreless tie with Jonathan Edwards. Andy Hansen and Pete Smalls stood out for Eliot, and although the Elephants twice drove to the Edwards five yard line, the home team held.

A fine goal line stand by ace linemen Bob Picard and Bob Boyd gained Adams House a 7 to 7 tie with traditional rival Saybrook. Saybrook scored first, midway through the second quarter, on a 12 yard pass from Jim Orr to Carl Van Winter. Saybrook had recovered an Adams fumble on the Gold Coast 30. Adams scored after a long march, when Bill Radomsky crossed off his own right tackle from five yards out. Jack King ran around end for the extra point.

Dudley Beaten

Silliman crushed Dudley 20 to 0. After Dudley fumbled on its own 30 on the third play of the game, John Rhinelander passed to Ed Flynn for the first touchdown. Rhinelander kicked the point. Silliman's Mal Guild capped a 30 yard march with a short smash for a touchdown, and Rhinelander again converted. Guild intercepted a pass in the final period and returned the ball for a touchdown.

Pierson College toppled Lowell, 19 to 0. At the beginning of the second period Paul Jeffries flipped a 30 yard pass to George Ellis in the end zone. Then at the start of the second half Paul Hoymann took a Jeffries handoff and dove over the line for a touchdown. Johnny Talbot added the final six pointer in the fourth quarter when he dashed 15 yards off tackle to score standing up.

Kirkland Loses

In the other game Calhoun defeated Kirkland 19 to 6. Former track star John Beni broke through for a 40 yard touchdown run in the first period. In the third quarter a 20 yard pass from Tom Skartz to Ed Moran set up a 20 yard run by Beni. Moran caught a Swartz pass for the extra point.

Beni scored his third touchdown of the day in the fourth period on a short plunge. Kirkland scored in the last minute on an eight yard drive by Bud Cramer.

In the freshman touch game, the Harvard Yard team from Weld South held, off a Yale yearling rally to win, 27 to 26. Wold took an early 20 to 6 lead over South Unit, but the Elis came roaring back and almost tied the game in the closing seconds.

In House-College soccer, Branford slipped one goal past Bellboy goalie Cliff Alexander for the only score, to win 1 to 0
