Champion Leverett becomes an underdog as it leads eight House tackle football teams against their respective Yale opponents at New Haven this afternoon. Each House will meet the College that finished in a relative position in intramural standings. Half of the games will start at 2:00 p.m., the others at 3:15, because of the limited number of fields adjacent to the Yale Bowl.
Leverett lost two starters, its last game of the year, and its unbeaten record on Wednesday and will have a hard time defeating Yale champion Branford.
Winthrop and Adams, having upset Leverett and Dunster respectively, tied for second place with identical 5-1-1 records and will face the same Colleges they faced last year.
Last fall, the Puritans could only tie Davenport, 7-7, while Saybrook downed the Gold Coasters, 13-7. But both Houses present strong, well-balanced teams this year and are favored to win.
Dunster vs. Berkeley
Dunster's eleven, harshly dumped out of the runner-up spot into a 5-2 record last Tuesday, hopes to bounce back against perennially strong Berkeley. Last fall, the Funsters lost to this year's champion Branford 7-6.
Kirkland House will take a 2-2-3 record against Calhoun. This is the same College the Deacons faced and lost to last year, 7-0. Kirkland's squad is composed mostly of sophomores this fall, however.
Eliot's Elephants, who boat Berkeley last fall for the House-College championship, slipped to sixth place this year in intramural standings. Nevertheless, they have more power than their 2-3-1 record shows and are favored to top Jonathan Edwards.
Dudley emerged from a winless streak by downing Lowell last Wednesday and hopes to continue uphill against Silliman College. The Commuters will be without the services of their captain, who broke his nose in the one victory.
Lowell Last
Last place Lowell, despite its no wins and seven losses, broke all precedent Wednesday by scoring a touchdown. That was all Pierson could do against the Bellboys last year, however, and it was enough to win. Lowell still has hope.
House and College soccer champions also meet this afternoon at 3 o'clock on the lower Berkshire field. Lowell, with an outstanding goalie and a strong forward line, will seek revenge for last year's 1-0 defeat by Branford as the two teams tangle once again.
Bellboy goalie Chris Alexander has allowed only one goal as Lowell ran up a six win, one tie record this fall. Top scorers for the team include Steele Commager, Ron Hok, and Jim Pates.
Leverett's soccer team, knocked out of a first place tie with Lowell when the Bellboys gave the Bunnies their only defeat, has decided to go down to Yale any way. Leverett will play its "brother College," Timothy Dwight.
In the third branch of organized House-College athletics, an eight-man Winthrop squad will invade New Haven bent upon bringing the long-absent touch football crown back to Cambridge. The Puritans will play at two o'clock, but even the director of intramural athletics doesn't know against whom.
Deacons Win Cross Country
In final local intramural competition yesterday Kirkland and Holworthy won the House and Yard cross country meets respectively. The Deacons, with 67 points, edged Adams and Dunster, who tied with 74. Eliot was fourth with 78, followed by Winthrop, Lowell, Dudley, and Leverett, in that order.
