Committee Will Try for Study Abroad in Groups

The Student Council committee for foreign credit will try for a group program instead of individual Junior Year Abroad, John W. Stokes '54 a said last night.

At the same time, Stokes, chairman of the committee, said that all honors candidates in five major fields would be polled shortly after Thanksgiving in an effort to determine student interest in such a program.

Stokes, who originally wanted the Junior Year Abroad left up to the individual, changed to "a more practical plan" after consultation with faculty members.

Faculty Leader

The way the Junior Year would be set up now, a small group under the auspices of the Student Council would go to France the first year, with the program, if successful, extended to other countries in the future. A faculty leader--on sabbatical or taking a year's absence--would act as coordinator for the group, arranging course schedules, trips, and activities. He would have done previous study in the country.

We feel that it's more realistic that the Faculty would grant credit for foreign study in groups," Stokes and yesterday, "and about the only difference would be that it isn't so decentralized."

Stokes called the poll of honors candidates "the best way to show the administration that there is student interest. It's the first step to take to see if we are moving in the right direction."

"There'll be room for suggestions on the polls, and beforehand Dean Bundy and I will set a percentage of favorable replies needed. If we get them, the program will go ahead. We've got to prove to the administration that there is enough interest." Honors candidates will probably be polled in the History, Government, Economics, Fine Arts, and Philosophy departments. But the current list is only tentative, according to stokes.
