Sir Herbert Read, Charles Eliot Norton lecturer this year, will deliver his first lecture, "The Vital Image," on Nov. 5. Sir Herbert's general theme will be "Art and the Development of the Human Consciousness."
The British poet and critic is known for his political philosophy as well as his poetry and art criticism. An author of several books as well as many interpretive works of art and poetry, he has taught at the Universities of Edinburgh, Liverpool, and London. He was also president of the Society for Education in Art for a number of years.
The second lecture, entitled "The Discovery of Beauty," will be given Nov. 12, followed by "Symbols for the Unknown." Sir Herbert will live at Harvard during the seven lectures.
Although the dates have not been announced, the subjects of his spring lectures will be: "The Human as an Ideal," "The Illusion of the Real," "The Realization of the Dream," and "A New Reality."
