Golf Team Defeats Amherst 8 to 2 as Timpson Shoots 71

By Richard H. Ullman

A double bogey on the 17th hole cost Bill Timpson a sub-par round yesterday, but the Crimson senior still managed to card a 71, best Harvard score in competition this season, as Coach Frank Richart's varsity swamped Amherst, 8 to 2, at the Dedham Country Club.

The meet, the last of the '52 season, was scored on the basis of singles matches and best-ball scores.

Timpson, playing second man against Amherst's Ed Bruning, rounded the turn on to the back nine with a one-under-par 35 on the difficult front side of the hilly, wooded Dedham course. He was even par on the back nine, and apparently had the year's only sub par round in the bag when a bad iron shot from the tee on the long par three 17th cost him two strokes and gave him a one-over-par 71 for the round. He beat Bruning 6 and 5.

Richort regards Timpson's swing to be the most compactly grooved on the team, and before the season opened predicted that he would do better than his early season ranking as seventh man indicated.

Welssman Two Over

Captain Paul Weissman, playing first man, defeated Amherst's Jim Williams 3 and 1. Weissman carded a 72, and was two under on the back nine. His back side 32, coupled with Timpson's round, gave the pair a best-ball total of 66, beating the William-Bruning combination 4 and 3.

Third man Dave Hedberg came from behind to tie Keith Redner of the Lord Jeffs. Hedberg at one point stood four down, but he remained cool, winning the last two holes, to gain the draw.

Mitch Rosenholtz, playing fourth, beat Jerry Clark of Amherst 4 and 2. The best ball match between Hedberg and Rosenholtz and Redner and Clark also resulted in a tie.

Brophy Shoots 72

Fifth man Jack Brophy fired a 72, his best score of the season, to beat Amherst's Skeet Ellis, 2 and 1. The two-over-par round was Brophy's best of the season. In sixth position, George Wheeling topped Dave Cummings of the Lord Jeffs 2 and 1. Brophy and Wheeling won the best-ball match 3 and 2.

In the day's last match, Amherst's Dave Simpson edged Crimson seventh man John Sears, 1 up.
