Love Chooses Five Veterans For Positions in First Eight

After putting four boats through a grueling five-day 75-mile vacation practice period, varsity crew coach Harvey Love has settled on his probable varsity eight. "The first boat is more or less set for the first race," Love said yesterday.

Captain Lou McCagg strokes this tentative varsity, together since Thursday, with two-year veteran George Gifford back in his old number seven seat. Juniors Loe Rouner, Phil DuBoia, and John Atherton are returning varsity lettermen at numbers six, four, and three, respectively, while sophomores Bill Geertsema and Swede Sundquist are at five and two. Bob Webb is rowing bow. Warren Clark and Al Lefkowitz share the coxing duties.

Love lost only two men from last year's first boat through graduation, but number four man. Link Boyden, has been out all vacation with a back injury and has only just started on the machines again this week. Larry Brownell, last year's freshman stroke, and Kim Whiting have also missed out on the vacation conditioning because of flu attacks.

Love is "hopeful" about his crews. "I am satisfied with the vacation progress," he said "we should have a good crew." With to time trials yet, the boatings are still indefinite.

The J.V. boat has Reuben Richards stroking, with Frank Peal at seven. Monty Goodale six, Jim Slocum five, George Kinnell four, Dick Higgins three, Steve Lincoln two, and Frank Huntington, bow. A third boat in very close to the J.V. eight.
