Outstanding light-weather sailing over the weekend by Johnny Bishop and Jim Nathanson brought the varsity sailors their first Eastern Championship since 1944.
The two Crimson aces tallied 216 points, as second place M.I.T. scored 193. But so far did Nathanson and Bishop spreadeagle the 11-team field that they clinched the title after only 20 of the 22 required races were completed. Previously undefeated Navy finished third, five points back of Tech.
Nathanson won six of his 11 races in Division A, and ended with 117 points, high for the regatta, 25 points ahead of the second-place man. Bishop's 98 points earned him third in Division B.
Tom Carroll, who skippered the first Division B race, picked up the remaining markers. Bishop sailed the rest of the schedule with Carroll and later Tinm Brown as his crew. Dean Howells and Tom Chinlund split the crewing duties in Nathanson's boat.
Meanwhile, at New London, George Robertson and Butch Horner finished fourth in the Heptagonal Dinghy Regatta. The Crimson had 81 points, 13 behind Tufts, the winner. M.I.T. had 88 points, and host Coast Guard 83, a scant two above the Crimson.
In the Freshman Individual Championships at Brown, Yardling Dave Robbins placed fifth in a field of 16. Tufts won.
