In the first match of the season, the varsity golf team downed the Boston University Terriers 5 to 2, yesterday at the Dedham Country Club.
Best individual performance of the afternoon was a two over par 72 fired by seventh man George Wheeling. Wheeling, a junior beat B.U.'s Richard Wallace by the top-sided score of 7 and 6.
Two Crimson starters went down to defeat, however, in the only matches Harvard dropped. Dusty Burke, playing first man for the second straight season, lost a 5 and 4 contest to Leo Mullen. The two were raised fairly even, but Mullen's steady game proved too much for Burke last season's hockey captain.
Number two man, Dave Hedberg lost to Gene Delphino, 3 and 2. Hedberg, a varsity swimming star, is also playing his second season on his present position on the ladder.
Captain Paul Weissman, playing number three slot, was the first Crimson golfer to carry a winning card into the clubhouse. Weissman beat Clifford Sharp, 5 and 3.
Mitch Rosenholtz hung up a 5 and 4 victory over B.U. fourth man Carl Fuller. Rosenholtz, sixth man on last season's team, has sharpened up his game considerably this year.
Playing fifth man, Bill Timpson coasted to a 6 and 4 win over B.U.'s Tom Tanner. The only close match of the afternoon was Crimson sixth man Jack Brophy's 1 up defeat of Chan Phinney. Wheeling's fine round ended the meet.
