Princeton Sextet Picks Up 4-1 Win As Crimson Sags

Princeton's hockey team added a good defense an excellent goal-tender, and some outrageous luck to a ragged, uninspired Harvard club to produce a 4 to 1 victory at the Arena last night.

It is not really fair to Tiger goalie Blair Torrey and his defensive cohorts to say that the Crimson could have won this one, but a couple of breaks early in the game might have given the Crimson a goal or two, and this literally would have made all the difference.

The Orange and Black built up a solid 3 to 0 lead before sophomore Norm Wood could stickhandle the puck past the spectacular Torrey, at 7:00 of the last period.

This goal seemed to resuscitate the sagging Crimson. It was unfortunate that it didn't come earlier, although the home team mobbed Torrey time and again. He showed a fine sense of anticipation, and put himself in position to stop many of the drives he couldn't see. Besides, the Tiger defense was all over its own zone, blocking many Crimson shots before they could reach the goalmouth, and covering possible shooters very well.

The Tigers got off to an early advantage at 3:46 of the first period when Bill Gall slipped a 30-foot screen shot into the Crimson cage. Two minutes later, Pete Fairfax alertly grabbed a loose puck in the center zone and coasted in untouched, to register the second point.

Then the Crimson tried a few ganging attacks. But Torrey was able to hold the fort, although at one point he was flat on the ice outside the crease, with the puck loose therein. No Crimson skater, though, could quite bat it home.

Jinx Cleaves tallied a slightly tainted second-period goal to give the Tigers a three-point bulge. Attempting a passout from behind the Crimson net, the Tiger wing banged the disk off the back of goalie Brad Richardson's leg. The puck rolled softly across the goalmouth, and plopped inside the far post.

After Wood's goal, the Crimson, led by Captain Dusty Burke, a standout performer all night, tried to climb back. But Torrey and the Tiger defense would not yield further. Hank Bothfeld sealed an already decided verdict at 18:56, blasting in a backhand drive from 20 feet out.Princeton goalie BLAIR TORREY made a total of 43 saves last night, including this one on NORM WOOD. But Wood got partial revenge later, when he scored the only Crimson goal. JOHN BRYAN (2) is the Princeton defenseman.
