Cambridge police will begin a concerted drive against all-night parking on the first of December, Captain Patrick J. McCarthy, chief of the Traffic Bureau, said yesterday.
McCarthy said police will continue issuing tickets at a normal rate, using leniency in some cases. But, after December 1st, "We're going to get every car that's parked in a restricted area."
"With the strong possibility of a snowfall in the near future," McCarthy said, "we've simply got to get these guys off the streets. Otherwise, snow removal will be almost impossible."
He added, "I don't mind seeing cars parked on one side of the street during the day. But when they park all night, then I get angry. But so far, they've been pretty good down on Plympton Street. The places where we have trouble are Holyoke and Dunster Streets, running from Mount Auburn down to the Houses. They always seem to be packed with cars that are parked overnight."
McCarthy said the reason for such a tremendous increase was due in part to the influx of politicians into the Cambridge area during the past few months. "We should warn them a few times," he said, ""but after that, when we'd find them parked in front of the City Hall or some other restricted area, 'we'd just have to issue a summons.
