Solicitors will begin visiting rooms in the Yard and Houses tonight as the University's annual Combined Charities drive gets under way. Canvassing will continue for five consecutive nights.
The overall goal is the same as last fall--$25,000. Of this sum the College is expected to contribute $22,000.
For the second consecutive year, the drive will solicit funds from all but three of the graduate schools, Curl Sapers '53, drive chairman, said yesterday. The Law, Business, and Medical Schools run separate campaigns. Radcliffe graduate students and members of the Advanced Management Training Program will be included in the University Drive.
There are six charities listed on the pledge card this year instead of the usual nine, with emphasis on student groups. They are: Phillips Brooks House, Salzburg Seminar, Harvard Aid to Indonesia, American Friends' Service Committee, National Scholarship and Service Fund for Negro Students, and the World Student Service Fund. Students can "write in" other charities.
Six Removed
Dropped from last year's list are CARE, the Boston Community Fund, the Children's Hospital, the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund, and the American Cancer Society.
At the request of the student Council for a better balance between international and domestic funds, the Charities Committee decided not to all the Experiment in International Living to the card.
The University's United Community Services Red Feather Drive started a college letter campaign Saturday to urge students to write in the Red Feather Drive.
Student contributions to the drive have declined over the past four years. Last fall it netted $16,708.08, while in 1948 $23,000 was collected. In 1949 and 1950 the totals were $23,000 and $18,115.46 respectively.
Lowell Leads
For the past two years Lowell, the largest House, has led by contributing over 12 percent of the total raised.
Earlier this fall Yale surpassed its goal of $37,000 for the entire university and faculty by over $2,000.
